Eric Franklin, an independent designer and builder, specializes in creating one of-a-kind pieces that are heavily influenced by the Japanese aesthetic. Over the years his designs have fused with the contemporary. His attention to detail helps create pieces that can be passed from generation to generation.
Eric's works in the following areas:
Exterior designs including designs, plans and production.
One of a kind pieces as well as complete interiors.
Sculpture, music stands, lamps and architectural fixtures.
Boats bring Eric's mastery of woodworking & design together with his love of water sports.
His services can be best used as a consultant, designer or design/production basis. Commissions for home office or business are welcome.
My intent has always been to provide extremely high quality design, furniture, construction and finish work. I have focused on the architectural design and craft of Japan, the Pacific Rim and Africa.
The simplicity and harmony of the crafts and art of indigenous culture provide a deep well of inspiration, not only for my period designs, but also contemporary work.
I have lived in cities and in the country all over the U.S. As a boy I loved the mountains, woods and the water. Also as a boy I loved making things. I attended college and grad school, studying science biology and the arts. By the time I graduated I was already producing furniture, sculpture and art. Unable to find a master to apprentice with, I taught myself. I read everything I could find about carpentry, woodworking and boat-building. I studied print making, ceramics, drawing and painting. Gradually a style and direction began to emerge. I think honest portrayal of the designs and the materials used to express them is most important to me. I try very hard to maintain a hand crafted, as opposed to a machine made quality in my work. My work seeks to express a sublime spirit, similar to that seen in a great old tree or a wind sculpted rock.
