All Shaw nylon area rugs now recyclable, Cradle-to-cradle process now available for all soft floor coverings
Dalton—Shaw Industries has been working for years on innovative ways of reducing waste, improving manufacturing processes and preserving natural resources—before environmental awareness became a trend, noted Kim Barta, Shaw Living’s brand manager. “Thanks to advances in sustainability technology and Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility in Augusta, Ga., all nylon area rugs from Shaw Living are now recyclable.”

In addition, area rugs made of Anso nylon will contain recycled content. Part of Shaw Green Edge, an umbrella program that encompasses the company’s social, economic and environmental initiatives, all Shaw products made of type 6 nylon are recyclable at the mill’s Evergreen facility. Last July, Shaw introduced the first recyclable rugs with the Premiere and Natural Expression collections.

With this announcement, Barta explained, half of all Shaw rugs are now recyclable. “These beautiful products allow the consumer to make an easy, eco-friendly choice for her home without having to sacrifice style, color or convenience. Additionally, she doesn’t have to pay more. It’s a simple, feel-good selection for the consumer.”

She noted recyclable rugs are available in Shaw’s designer collections, including Kathy Ireland’s First Lady and Young Attitudes, Tommy Bahama, Jack Nicklaus, mary-kateandahsley and more.

The rugs are recycled in a closed-loop process using the cradle-to-cradle philosophy, she said. This is the process of taking a product after its useful life, breaking it down into its raw building blocks and rebuilding the same product over and over again—without the loss of performance or aesthetic qualities. Shaw recycles in this model by breaking down type 6 nylon into its original material—caprolactam—and rebuilding it into virgin-like nylon.

“Once a consumer is ready to recycle her rug,” Barta said, “a product identification label directs her to shawfloors.com/ recycle to locate the nearest collection site. This label also explains the company’s environmental story.”
