Armstrong promotion back by popular demand
If Armstrong was ecstatic when more than 7,000 participated in its four-month What’s the Big Deal promotion last fall, imagine the jubilation this spring when as of April 1, the contest’s second-generation launch date, over 8,000 people had signed up.

Actually, the results are not surprising in light of results of a survey conducted by Armstrong which revealed that an overwhelming 93% of contestants said they would participate again. “It wasn’t a matter of IF the competition would occur again, it was a matter of WHEN we were going to do it,” said Paul Murfin, vice president of sales and distribution.

Aptly named, “What’s the Big Deal Spring 2009 Retail Salesperson Stimulus Package,” even more people are jumping on board for this go-round. “Things are progressing reasonably well,” Murfin said. “We have about 1,000 new people. And I’m hoping for even more.” The competition is once again open to all salespeople who sell Armstrong hardwood, laminate and sheet vinyl, and offers the opportunity to win trips, prizes and the most favored of the 2008 competition, cold, hard cash.

The Armstrong survey was conducted to provide feedback for the four-month program through an online questionnaire covering such topics as prizes, communication, products and program length. Aside from the overwhelming response of those who said they would participate again, 81% said they wanted a longer program. One online reply summed up a common feeling: “I loved this program! I want to do it again and make it longer!”

Particular products of sheet vinyl, laminate and hardwood were featured in the promotion, and when asked to rate the level of satisfaction among the eligible products, 64% of those surveyed said they were satisfied with the amount of products included in the program, and 82% said the program influenced them to suggest more Armstrong products to the customer.

In addition to giving away monthly cash prizes of $1,000 to top sales winners and a one-time prize of $20,000 to the winners of each flooring category, Armstrong gave away numerous prizes including children’s toys, electronics, jewelry and housewares. Given that the competition was held during the holiday season, many participants used their reward prizes for holiday gift giving. When asked to rate the level of satisfaction of the available prizes, many commented with phrases like, “Thanks for buying my Christmas presents!”

And, 64% of those surveyed said Armstrong’s interaction and communication was higher than contests conducted by competitors, and 63% said the prizes and cash awards were higher than the competition.
