Shaw teams with Canadian dealer on recycling project
TORONTO—Showing how a mill and dealer can work in harmony with each other and the environment, Shaw Industries and local flooring company Florstar recently teamed up to not only divert 19 football fields worth of carpet from the landfill but replace it with new broadloom that is itself recyclable.

The project was part of a remodel of the properties under Realstar Management, a leading provider of rental accommodations in Canada. All told, 125,000 square yards of worn carpet were diverted from landfill sites and shipped to Shaw’s Evergreen Nylon Facility in Augusta, Ga.

Jamie MacDonald, Realstar’s senior vice president of operations, said in addition to using recyclable carpet as a replacement, the carpet was transported on pallets made of recycled cardboard, and the padding, plastic wrapping and cardboard scraps used to transport the rolls were also collected and recycled.

“Realstar is committed to continually seeking innovative solutions to reduce waste and reuse and recycle whenever possible,” he said.
