Shaw to re-open fiber facility, 200 jobs expected to be created
By Matthew Spieler
CALHOUN, GA.—Business may still not be close to prime conditions but Shaw Industries is reversing a trend being played out by companies around the country: The manufacturer announced it is re-commissioning an idled facility here that will eventually create up to 200 new jobs.

Paul Richard, Shaw’s vice president of human resources, told FCNews the plant (referred to as D7) was originally closed due to a shift in demand for the type of product produced there. “Market demand, including shifts in both volume and product mix, is constantly evolving, and Shaw will continue to adjust manufacturing capability as needed. The new D7 operation will primarily process nylon filament in what once was a spun yarn manufacturing facility.”

Bringing D7 back to life, he added, will increase Shaw’s capacity to process filament yarn for various residential carpet products and will not only meet customer demand but allow for future growth in this area of business.

The company’s current plans include enlarging and augmenting its operations within the carpet division by outfitting D7 with the equipment and infrastructure necessary for this operation.

Shaw expects this expansion to be complete by the middle of 2010. Richard said with regard to the 200 jobs expected to be created, former Shaw associates will be given first preference for the openings. “We will do our best to give preference to previous employees.”

With Georgia being one of the states hit hardest by unemployment—in July the Calhoun region had an 11.5% unemployment rate, up nearly 5% from the same period a year ago—the announcement of the re-opening did not go unnoticed.

“It’s great news for Georgia that one of our longtime manufacturers is planning for future growth in the state,” said Governor Sonny Perdue. “It’s a testament to the strength of our workforce and infrastructure that, even during this economic downturn, Shaw still finds Georgia the best place to invest in its future.”

Larry Roye, chairman of the Development Authority of Gordon County, noted “Shaw has always been an outstanding corporate citizen and major employer in Calhoun and Gordon County, and we are excited to have the company expand in our community.”
