Shaw’s Epic gets C2C certified
DALTON—Shaw’s Epic Hardwood line was recently awarded a silver level Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Certification by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). Shaw, with the Epic hardwood engineered product made from post-industrial recycled wood, is the first manufacturer of wood flooring products to receive this distinction.

MBDC was founded in 1995 by architect William McDonough and chemist Michael Braungart, to help end the cradle-to-grave process and eliminate manufacturing waste. In an effort to move production toward healthier and more sustainable ways, MBDC weighs certain factors to certify products.

One factor is the use of environmentally safe and healthy materials, which looks at chemical classification of elements such as carcinogens, reproductive risks, biodegration and toxicity. Water and energy efficiency considers the use of renewable energy sources when available. Social responsibility and recycling design are also important, in that the product must be effective after its functioning consumer life as a recyclable commodity.

In addition to C2C certification, Scott Scandlin, vice president of business development for Shaw’s Hard Surfaces division, said Epic’s veneers are also in compliance with the Lacey Act and CARB requirements, and are sourced from North American forests deemed sustainable by Agriculture. He added the innermost layer, EnviroCore, is made from post-industrial recycled con tent and that Epic styles use about 50% less newly harvested wood than other 3/8-inch engineered boards.

“We’re proud to have achieved C2C certification from MBDC,” he said. “As more and more consumers ask for environmentally friendly products, Epic hard wood styles have become increasingly important.”
