Mannington: Raising green standards across all floor covering categories
With products covering the full spectrum of carpet and hard surface flooring, Mannington Commercial is raising sustainability and performance standards for commercial floor covering through innovative products, smart reclamation and recycling, and use of renewable energy.

This year saw Mannington launch the industry’s first 25% post-consumer VCT, through a program that is keeping millions of pounds of the material out of landfills. More than one billion pounds of VCT go to landfills annually and, until now, no company has been able to recycle old VCT into new at a level of more than 5% postconsumer waste.

By investing in recycling technology and reclamation infrastructure, the company re-launched its Premium Tile—which was already certified as an Environmentally Preferable Product— with 25% post-consumer content. Through a unique take-back partnership with a regional company, Mannington has been able to offer the tile at zero cost increase to customers.

Our VCT n2 VCT program is only one example of the company’s commitment to offer sustainable choices that work. Mannington is also the only manufacturer awarded Gold for all hard surface products under the NSF-332-2007 standard.

In 2009, we also saw the premiere of Mannington’s premium rubber flooring and wall base line. With a superior formulation of thermoset rubber, these vinyl alternative products are developed for flexibility and performance, preserving their color under heavy traffic while enabling easier installation, cleaning and maintenance.

Through its LOOP program, Mannington reclaims any carpet tile, made by any manufacturer. For projects over 2,500 square yards, this is done at no charge. An example of how this program diverts products from the landfill is InfinityRE modular carpet backing, which contains 30% recycled content—including 10% post- consumer carpet from LOOP reclamation—and is certified as an Environmentally Preferable Product, NSF-140-2007 Platinum.

Mannington is also leading sustainability innovation by using synergy between carpet and hard surface: RelayRE is beautiful six-foot resilient sheet that is 35% recycled content—including 20% post-consumer carpet from LOOP—ground up and combined with other components. Products in the RelayRE collection were awarded NSF 332-2007 Gold and FloorScore certification for indoor air quality.

RelayRE is manufactured at Mannington’s New Jersey facilities, where the company has installed more than two acres of solar photovoltaic arrays. The largest solar array in use in the floor covering industry by more than seven times over, it generates clean electricity that helps power the site.

Mannington is committed to ensuring that it lives up to its environmental commitments and promises, as well as its high standards of style and performance. These are sustainable choices that work—keeping flooring out of landfills, using waste as materials and rewriting industry environmental standards.
