SmartStrand® Challenge at NAA Convention Shows Value of New Fiber for Multifamily Use
NEW ORLEANS (July 12, 2010)—There was a free iPad in the balance at the Mohawk “SmartStrand Challenge,” and attendees at the 2010 National Apartment Association Convention tried their hardest to win it, using the nastiest household stains they could find.

But in the end, they were no match for Mohawk’s SmartStrand carpet.

At the NAA show, convention goers were allowed to stain samples of SmartStrand carpet with mustard, ketchup, red wine, fruit punch, Hershey’s chocolate syrup, soy sauce, grape jelly, and other hard-to-remove materials. The stains were allowed to set, and during the last show session, the carpet samples were professionally cleaned. If a stain didn’t come out, the “owner” of that stain would win the iPad.

Unfortunately for the stain perpetrators, the carpet cleaned up easily, with no traces of stain.

Mohawk created the “SmartStrand Challenge” at the NAA convention to demonstrate the permanent, built-in stain resistance of its SmartStrand carpet, a product so unique that the FTC granted it its own new fiber subcategory, triexta, making it the first truly new carpet fiber in over 50 years.

Mohawk SmartStrand triexta carpet has permanent stain resistance, durability and resilience as good or better than nylon, and exceptional comfort and value.

“This makes SmartStrand the choice for multifamily,” said Seth Arnold, Mohawk Marketing Director. “Because of its durability and stain resistance, it’s possible to extend the life of the carpet for additional rentals before replacement. That can have a major impact on ROI.”

Mohawk has conducted other “SmartStrand Challenges” over the last year. In August of 2009, SmartStrand carpet was placed in an enclosure with a 2,800 lb. black rhino for two weeks. The carpet underwent major staining and soiling, but again came clean. In April of this year, more than 95,000 people walked across SmartStrand carpet at The Family Circle Cup tennis tournament in a week’s time. The carpet cleaned easily and showed no signs of wear.
