Using Facebook to drive store traffic

Facebook provides flooring retailers a huge opportunity for some of the most cost-effective advertising possible in today’s most lucrative social media marketplace.

The average Facebook user claims 130 friends. If a flooring retailer exhibits its goods and services, getting that user to brag, in effect, to endorse the store, chances are another word-of-mouth sale will come along. And since Facebook is a visual medium, the saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words.

The savvy flooring dealer should use a good digital camera with before and after photos to share with the consumer (of course, ask her permission, usually at the sale or following a smooth installation). The customer can also share those photos with her friends. Do not be shy about encouraging your customers to pass along their good experiences with your store.

These photographs and comments will serve dual purposes. As your business builds a network of those who “like” your store (Facebook used to call them “fans”), you can start reaching out and connecting to new consumers interested in flooring, possibly finding one or two among each user’s 130 friends. Likewise, those who stumble upon your store’s Facebook page will find satisfied consumers and beautiful room scenes of jobs well done.

To establish a page for your business, it’s very easy. After you’ve logged in on your personal account (yes, you need a personal account), click on the “Ads and Pages” link along the right side. Then select “Create Page” in the top right. You’ll be generating an “official” page for your business.

Use your store’s name so consumers will recognize it best. Populate that page with tips and tricks of interest. Don’t stick to only sales—that is something that will quickly lose relevance. You want consumers to view your store for the occasional design and style tip along with floor cleaning information. Make your page fun and with personality.

Moreover, those room scenes from previous customers serve to inspire future ones, so post away. Over time, your gallery will become filled with beautiful rooms and soaring compliments. And every new connection gives you an opportunity to share yourself with 130 more friends.
