Mannington expands solar energy system
SALEM, N.J.—Mannington Mills is entering Phase II of the solar energy system installation at its New Jersey manufacturing facilities. More than two acres of solar photovoltaic panels are already installed on site, avoiding more than 478,000 pounds of CO2 greenhouse gases per year since operations began in late 2008.

The existing system is already considered the largest in the flooring industry. The expansion, to be completed this calendar year, will increase the system’s power to almost a megawatt and extend the panels over a total of seven rooftops, occupying 3 1/2 acres of roof space.

Mannington’s energy conservation and renewable energy use has been recognized by U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, who said the manufacturer is “among the vanguard of forward-thinking American companies as a leader in industrial energy efficiency.” Earlier this spring, the Department of Energy recognized the mill as one of fewer than 50 Save Energy Now Leaders across the country (FCNews, June 14/21).

“When any company seeks to reduce its energy usage and resulting emissions, the best approach grows out of common sense,” said Dave Kitts, Mannington’s vice president, environment. “It’s important first to curb unnecessary use of energy, but progressive companies will change products or processes to improve efficiency in their manufacturing as well as seek out and implement large-scale renewable energy programs.”
