House Beautiful’s Kitchen of the Year project features Mohawk flooring
NEW YORK—It’s one of the premier events of the year for Rockefeller Center, the home design industry and Mohawk Industries. The House Beautiful Kitchen of the Year Project sets a standard for innovation, creativity, function and style.

The 2010 Kitchen of the Year, designed by Jeff Lewis, features Mohawk hardwood and carpet as key elements. Lewis, whose docu-series “Flipping Out” began its fourth season on Bravo earlier in August, took on the challenge of designing this year’s state-of-the-art Kitchen of the Year.

Known best to his fans as a successful real estate entrepreneur, Lewis brought his experience and innovative thinking to re-imagine the 1,000-square-foot, fully functioning kitchen, which also boasts an additional 1,000 square feet of outdoor living space in the form of fully furnished decks. The project, Lewis’ first in New York, was a unique challenge and yielded beautiful results, noted David Duncan, Mohawk’s vice president of marketing.

The kitchen showcases Mohawk’s Zanzibar Reclaimed hardwood, an FSC certified 5-inch-wide product that features wood reclaimed from locations throughout the world with a time worn look.

The adjacent living space is covered in Mohawk’s SmartStrand Sorona carpet, which provides superior stain resistance due to the way it’s engineered, Duncan said. “Stain protectors are built in the carpet fiber and will never wear or wash off. It will even resist discoloration from bleach.”

The flooring fit perfectly with Lewis’ concept. “My personality is reflected in my design. I don’t like clutter or confined spaces, and I need things to be clean and minimal.”

Duncan added the project shows what’s possible with modern materials. “Mohawk products demonstrate beauty, functionality and sustainability without compromise.”

Lewis noted this is the first time he worked with Mohawk and was extremely impressed with the company and its products—so much so he’s considering Mohawk for upcoming projects.

Mohawk handyman/HGTV personality Chip Wade was also on hand, blogging about the kitchen and Mohawk’s products. You can read about it on his blog.
