Shaw to close spun yarn facility
DALTON—Shaw Industries will close Plant 82, a spun yarn facility located in Chatsworth, Ga., in the upcoming weeks.

In recent years, noted Al Scruggs, Shaw’s director of human resources, the entire carpet industry has seen customer preference drastically move away from staple yarn systems in favor of carpet products manufactured with filament yarn. “The decision to close Plant 82 is a result of this industry-wide mix change and is necessary in order to balance production.”

Plant 82 employs about 306 associates, and Shaw is “confident that during the next 90-day period it will be able to offer positions to all hourly associates who choose to remain with the company,” he said.

Shaw is providing immediate support to assist affected associates during this time of transition and will deploy its Central Hiring Office resources to focus on matching displaced associates with openings at other Shaw locations. The mill is also partnering with the Georgia Department of Labor’s Rapid Response Team to provide on-site one-on-one sessions to counsel associates, explain benefits, and provide out-placement and retraining.
