Mohawk’s EverStrand® Family of Carpets and Wear-Dated® Revive™ Collection Receive UL Environmental Claim Validations
DALTON, Ga. April 20, 2012— Mohawk continues to lead the flooring industry with its commitment to sustainability and recycling efforts. The company’s EverStrand family of carpets, which is made with up to 100 percent post-consumer recycled fiber content, has earned “Environmental Claim Validation” from UL Environment, a business unit of UL (Underwriters Laboratories), as has Mohawk’s Wear-Dated Revive collection. UL is a global independent safety science company established in 1894, offering expertise across five key strategic businesses: Product Safety, Environment, Life and Health, Verification Services and Knowledge Services.

“UL is the most trusted third-party product safety testing and verification organization in industry today,” said Steve Powers, senior vice president of product development at Mohawk. “Having UL Environment validate the environmental claims we make regarding our EverStrand and Wear-Dated Revive carpet programs proves Mohawk is a company of high standards. We believe in transparency, and this is another way we can show our retailer partners and consumers that we stand behind all of the products and environmental claims we make.”

Each year, Mohawk recycles up to three billion plastic beverage bottles, giving PET resins new life as EverStrand and Wear-Dated Revive carpet fiber. Mohawk is the industry’s oldest and largest recycler of plastic beverage bottles, diverting more than 30 billion bottles from landfills since 1999. All of this takes place at Mohawk’s PET extrusion facility in Summerville, Ga., which UL Environment has now validated as a “Post-Consumer Reclamation Facility.” The Summerville mill is the first in the flooring industry to receive this impressive validation from UL Environment.

Mohawk is the only manufacturer that provides on-demand certification letters to retailers and consumers, which verify a product’s recycled content. UL Environment validated Mohawk’s claim that its EverStrand spun fiber contains 100 percent post-consumer recycled PET base fiber. UL Environment also validated Mohawk’s claim that its EverStrand BCF and Wear-Dated Revive fibers contain 35 percent recycled content, with a minimum of 30 percent post-consumer recycled PET base fiber and five percent post-industrial material.

“We applaud Mohawk for demonstrating their commitment to sustainability through third-party validation,” said Steve Wenc, president of UL Environment. “The UL Environment mission is to advance global sustainability, environmental health, and safety by supporting the growth and development of environmentally-preferable products, services, and organizations. We are pleased that Mohawk is helping support our mission by having achieved Environmental Claim Validations.”

Moving forward, Mohawk will display the UL “Environmental Claim Validation” badge on all EverStrand and Wear-Dated Revive deck boards, as well as other relevant merchandising and point-of-sales materials.

“Most everyone is familiar with the UL brand, and by displaying it on our merchandising, we create an opportunity for the retail sales associate to begin a valuable conversation with the customer,” said Seth Arnold, director of market strategy and research at Mohawk. “Mohawk’s recycled bottle story is compelling and an excellent launching point, as these environmentally-friendly fibers offer remarkable color clarity and excellent stain and fade resistance. EverStrand and Wear-Dated Revive are both great options for today’s consumer.”

All Mohawk EverStrand and Wear-Dated Revive collections feature lifetime stain, soil and pet warranties. To learn more about Mohawk’s UL “Environmental Claim Validations,” and related merchandising materials, visit www.MohawkToday.com or contact your Mohawk sales representative.
