Methods for Creating Resilient Communities to Be Addressed at Upcoming Institute Symposium
When a disaster strikes, whether natural or man-made, the results can be devastating for communities. Disruptions can impact residents, businesses and daily life. The Security and Disaster Preparedness Symposium: Means and Methods for Creating Resilient Communities will address these issues. Participate and engage with the experts on ways to increase community involvement to improve resilience and prepare for potential disasters. The Symposium will be held Wednesday, January 7, 2015, 9:45 am - 5:30 pm, as part of Building Innovation 2015: The National Institute of Building Sciences Third Annual Conference and Expo.
The concept of resilience encompasses buildings, infrastructure, business continuity and financial stability in a community. The effectiveness of a resilient community depends upon its ability to anticipate, absorb, adapt to and/or rapidly recover from a potentially disruptive event. This one-day symposium will focus on an approach to developing resilience that broadly encompasses physical, social, economic, environmental and security elements that can lead to a decision-making tool or index for evaluating a community’s resilience. Presenters will emphasize the role of social groups and businesses; public and private sector regulatory-based actions; the use of state-of-the-art design and construction; hazard and risk assessment; and political and economic considerations in achieving resiliency.
Topics will address: resiliency in public-private sector programs; social considerations; economic considerations; cascading effects of hazards; the regional Integrated Rapid Visual Screening tool; the 2015 National Earthquake Hazard Reduction (NEHRP) Recommended Seismic Provisions; wind codes; public expectations of disaster performance; lifeline interactions; school security; and cyber security.
The Symposium’s coordinators designed a program that gives participants the opportunity to engage with speakers and each other in extended question and answer (Q&A) sessions on each topic. View the speaker list and session descriptions.
