NSF International Finalizes First Environmental Product Declaration for PPG’s Architectural Coatings
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – NSF Sustainability, a division of global public health organization NSF International, has verified an environmental product declaration (EPD) for PPG Paints™ SPEEDHIDE® zero Interior Zero VOC* (volatile organic compounds) latex paint.

An EPD is an internationally recognized and standardized tool that reports the environmental impacts of products as identified in a life cycle assessment (LCA). Through an LCA, environmental impacts associated with a product or service are identified and quantified throughout its life cycle. NSF Sustainability previously developed a product category rule (PCR) for architectural coatings that defines the information that must be covered by an LCA and included in the EPD report.

“We are excited to publish our inaugural EPD for PPG’s architectural coatings business,” said Mary Ellen Shivetts, Senior Product Stewardship Manager, PPG. “At PPG, we recognize the necessity of science-based environmental information to highlight the value of our PPG Paints™ SPEEDHIDE® zero products to a marketplace focused on more sustainable interior environments.”

PPG Paints™ SPEEDHIDE® zero paint is formulated to meet the performance requirements of professional master interior painters. It also meets the most stringent VOC* regulations nationwide and the Master Painters Institute (MPI) rigorous environmental requirements. PPG draws upon the company’s commitment to environmental coatings research and manufacturing excellence to deliver the latest technology in products such as Speedhide zero paint.

“We congratulate PPG on its SPEEDHIDE® zero paint EPD,” said Jenny Oorbeck, General Manager, NSF Sustainability. “EPDs are helping to transform the green building marketplace by enabling purchasing decisions that are based on sound environmental information.”

This PPG EPD meets the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED® v4 Green Building Rating System under Credit MRC-2 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization: Environmental Product Declarations. This EPD can also be used to meet requirements within other green building ratings programs such as Green Globes and Living Building Certification
