The company was founded by Steve and Gloria Benson in the garage of their city home, where they cleaned carpets for San Francisco-area hotels. Eventually, their business grew to encompass residential carpet cleaning, and then new carpet sales and installations. It didn't take long before the business outgrew the confines of their garage. Steve moved the business south of the city, which was then mostly farms and space. His then state-of-the-art cleaning plant and new carpet showroom ed in 1956.

Steve Benson proved to be a visionary, as now South San Francisco is a commerce center conveniently linked to more than 1 million residents in a 30-mile radius by an efficient highwaytem. The Steve's Flooring became more closely identified with carpet services when a second generation took the helm.

His son Bruce Benson took over the business in 1970, and continued to increase the company revenues by offering premium quality products and extraordinary service. The nature of the family-operated business dictated that their children sp time at the store, and before long Steve's son Scott and daughter Lana were earning their allowances doing chores around the store.

Despite a changing business landscape that has seen national chain stores and outlet centers prevail over locally owned family carpet centers, Steve's Flooring has kept pace and beaten the competition by adhering to the generations-old principles of quality and depability.
